A YouTube viewer commented on our Dragon Knockout video: “…why not just step into a twisted horse stance and then unwind rather than jump into a twisted horse stance. I call this Steal-A-Step, by keeping your hands still in space and stepping into a twisted horse stance your opponent will never know you’ve moved if you do it correctly.”

First, thanks for this observant insight. Our viewer is describing the idealized form execution of kung fu’s steal-a-step technique, which I demonstrated in the video. Yet when I demonstrate function or practical application I seem to jump into it. Why this break with correct form?

Within a traditional fighting context (both fighters maneuvering in horse, cat, twisted stance, etc.), the formal dragon stepping is effective. However, against a modern fighter on balls of his feet, using broken rhythm and erratic motions, traditional footwork, though more stable, is inefficient. Too slow. It has a low probability of connecting.

It may appear that my jump is a wasted motion but it is actually a skip from a JKD stance. Skipping is faster and more deceptive than stepping. At TanDao we preserve traditional form because “form is the heart and soul” of true martial arts that transcends fighting. But for real fighting in today’s world of MMA and street brawling, form must adapt to be totally efficient.

At TanDao we urge modern fighters to learn the secrets of how to decode the hidden science hidden in form and realize that there are tactics and strategies that will enhance their practical kick ass approach. At the same time, we encourage traditional martial artists to adapt stylized form to modern situations. Evolving Martial Artists explore and practice to go beyond their present truths.

Check out how I use this spinning hammer fist during the gang rumble I choreographed at 3:05 in the film The Wanderers. It was the first time this technique was used in a Hollywood film. Though over thirty years ago, somethings stand the test of time.

JKD, MMA, the webs access to global martial arts systems have challenged yesterday’s purist attitude that believed in the absolute superiority of their system. Today’s martial artists – traditionalists as well as modern – are accustomed to examining other styles in the quest to create or discover the ultimate kick ass techniques. You can bet that the young warrior monks at the Shaolin watch MMA. Gotta keep the edge with the latest info.

What is more powerful a boxer’s right cross, a JKD straight or a karate reverse punch? How does the grappling of systema, krav maga or jujitsu compare? Whether your style is aikido, wing chun, capoeira, or JKD, there are inherent strengths and weaknesses.

Comparative combat is vital for today’s martial artist. Though sentiment may lead us to feel otherwise, there is no ultimate system. Despite the infinite variety of techniques – kicks, punches, throws and joint locks – there are universal principles underlying them all. A kick between the legs is the same whatever the style. Right?

Unfortunately the indiscriminate adaptation of “absorb what is useful” or “use it if it works attitude,” often creates superficial understanding of movements. Worse, it diminishes the depth of much traditional knowledge. In the name of universal principles there is a simplistic reduction of the techniques as it’s “all the same.” We simply cannot appreciate the ingenuity of methods that require decades of training to realize. At the same time, we must recognize the aspects of traditional teachings that are antiquated for today’s lifestyle. Finding this balance is challenging.

Comparative combat is more than believing that there are universal principles behind all systems. Do you know the differences between a Thai, Tae kwon do, Goju or JKD round kick? They are similar – but different. They employ different biomechanics. For students this may be confusing. So we must learn to ask critical questions on technique, tactics and strategy. What are the differences? How do they generate power? Why are they different? What are the strength’s and weaknesses? And, so what?

We must study the differences between the variety of techniques and styles before we can discover universal principles. For Evolving Martial Artist seeking the Way of Movement, comparative analysis leads to seeing the same technique with new eyes. Gives you the edge.

Keep practicing, exploring and adapting,

Hi All,

TanDao Fight Lab’s Within the Flow, introduces Tan’s Dazzling Hands (TDH, the internal stage of TanDao) dynamic free flow movement. Graceful and fluid.
“Hao kan, bu hao yong,” is a Chinese phrase that means: “it looks good, but is useless.” We realize that to modern reality based fighters, who view martial arts through the eyes of science, these soft circular moves appear flowery and utterly unrealistic for combat.

Yet to those initiated into the secrets of traditional form, these natural and spontaneous impromptu internal hand techniques conceal functional self protection techniques and practical tactics. To those with eyes to see, know that Shaolin and Daoist masters encoded principles of biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology within these flowery motions. But the keys to deciphering them were guarded.

So despite the appearance of softness and elegance, there is martial power. Are you aware of the secret keys and specialized training tips needed to adapt these dynamic free flow moves to brutal combat? And besides hidden martial power, the ancients knew that within the flow of the internal life force energy or qi are powerful ways to promote health, longevity and personal transformation.

Let go!
Discover power
Within the flow

In Enter the Dragon, a karateka (Bob Wall) shatters a wooden board with his punch to intimidate Bruce Lee before a fight. Lee gives his famous retort, “Boards don’t hit back.” A somewhat similar comment was made regarding the animal and TDH strikes on our loyal training dummy, Big Wang, who endures punishment without complaint each week. “The dummy has no arms. A real opponent has arms and will be trying to hit you back.”

Makes sense. Using Big Wang alone will not teach you how to fight, no more than just kicking a heavy bag, striking a Wing Chun wooden man, or punching hand mitts. But no human training partner can be hit full force in the eyes, throat, neck or groin as can Big Wang. Consider: samurai committed seppuku or harakiri (belly splitting) not just for honor, but to avoid becoming live targets for captors eager to experiment on the efficacy of their techniques. Full impact punching, round, front and side kicking a dummy, penetrating into target vital pressure points and getting the “feel” of the human anatomy are advantages of practicing on Big Wang. Big Wang is a valuable training partner for developing speed, power and accuracy.

Evolving Martial Artists also realize that utilizing training equipment does not replace two man training and sparring. The fast, powerful and accurate expression of their fighting techniques against dummies, heavy bags, punching mitts, or bricks is never equivalent to hitting a living, moving, thinking opponent. Sure, Big Wang is tough and takes your most lethal blows, but remember: boards and Big Wang don’t hit back.

Phony Fights Are Fun

Rocky vs. Apollo Creed, Luke Skywalker vs. Dearth Vadar, Achilles vs. Hector. Martial artists are thrilled by movie duels…brawny mano y mano encounters between armed or unarmed fighters engaged in a deadly dance. Awesome.

Then there’s the legendary martial art duel between Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris. Here hand-to-hand combat is elevated by the dream match between two martial art greats. Real martial artists. Real martial art techniques. What an opportunity to study real fighting. Not.

Confusing Make Believe Fighting And Real Fighting

Scanning the web, I found a JKD instructor in Japan demonstrating Bruce Lee’s “style of no-style”. Impressive. His fighting attributes were superb, evidently he trained hard to emulate his hero. He had the look. He had the rap. But he didn’t have “it.”

His self-defense was unrealistic. He was literally copying Lee’s movie fight scenes that mixed legitimate JKD intercepting punches, kicks and unrealistic techniques like high spinning wheel kicks, spinning kicks and back fists. Sadly, he sincerely believed he was teaching Lee’s authentic JKD. Dangerous.

Martial artists who are inexperienced in street fighting may be unwitting victims of Bruce Lee’s inspiring film fights. They confuse real and make believe. But we must not mix up Bruce Lee the innovative fighter and Bruce Lee the creative showman.

Bruce Lee’s Film Fights Are Fantasy

First, for clarity, since one of the components of the TanDao System is JKD, this is not about Lee’s martial art philosophy nor his abilities. It is about mixing up film fantasy and fact. Lee’s dual intention of entertaining and educating through movies is the root of much misunderstanding. He was the first to say that his choreographed fights are exaggerated for cinematic enjoyment. For example, his lead leg round kick to the head or his single back fist knockout, though possible, are unrealistic. At the same time, he wanted to educate by including JKD concepts in his fights. So he also shows efficient intercepting punches and kicks. Which is which?

There is a vast difference in executing a theatrical punch and realistic punch. Because of Lee’s extraordinary power, he could shatter the bones in his fist on impact with a skull if he punched with the exaggerated body mechanics used in his film. With this in mind, we may find it educating and fun watching Lee’s fight scenes with critical eyes.

Evolving Martial Artists differentiate between movie techniques that are theoretically possible but highly improbable in practice. Part of our martial arts journey is to discover this. But when in doubt, err on the side of real fighting.

Watch the classic duel above) at the Roman Colosseum from Way of the Dragon. Let us know what is realistic and what is not.

Keep practicing and exploring,

Our recent special edition TanDao Fight Lab, titled Moon Dragon, is lyrical and reflective – different from our usual high testosterone fueled videos on the science of fighting. Instead of tips on biomechanics, strategy and techniques to enhance the martial warrior’s strikes and kicks, this piece goes further down the martial path to the mysterious realms of Zen and the Dao.

Many martial warriors, practical fighters and combat athletes focused on reality fighting may view the ephemeral side of martial arts movement as irrelevant for the street and ring. Of course, there is the problem of form and function: it is one thing to devastate imaginary opponents with techniques by gracefully waving your arms through the air. It is another, to adapt those movements against a real attacker, unpredictable, uncooperative and dangerous.

But Evolving Martial Artists, already proficient in kicking ass, are open to exploring the aesthetic and spiritual aspects. The way of movement transcends fighting. Yet our world is violent. So when push comes to shove, the martial monk’s peaceful moving meditation is transformed into the science of combat.

Let us know how you feel about this video.

Power and peace,

Hardness and softness is a central principle in Chinese martial arts. Karate, MMA, and Tae Kwon Do are examples of hard styles. Tai Ji and Ba Gua are soft. Last year, the year of the tiger, our videos focused on hard power through TanDao Tiger Combat. That is yang without yin. So it’s appropriate this year of the rabbit. we introduce the soft power of Tan’s Dazzling Hands.

Our challenge at TanDao is to balance the dual aims of the martial way: self-defense and self-cultivation (another hard/soft metaphor). Our audience tends to gravitate to our fight lab videos. Tips and techniques on increasing tiger chokes and kicking power seem to be more popular then those on breathing and healing. Hmm…

So we’re pleased that our guest post by Bob Ellal on the therapeutic aspects of qi gong generated such interest. Bob, a martial scholar – and a smart guy – uses anatomy and physiology to provide a rationale for Chinese metaphysical concepts: qi, yin and yang, etc., often unfamiliar to a Western mind. The science behind the martial arts increases our appreciation of advance martial knowledge that transcends fighting. Martial artists interested in wellness and healing through forms, will discover this post on qi is relevant to our Universal Form.

Hard/Soft Experiment
The controversy over the superiority of hard or soft power is ongoing. Don’t take tradition, Bruce Lee, your sensei or my word as the arbiter of truth. Figure it out yourself. Experiment. You can do this by using the Universal Form.

Many believe the Universal Form is a hard dynamic tension form for strength like Hung’s iron wire or a Uechi or Goju Sanchin. Yet the form can be done hard or soft. When performed in a slow flowing manner, it cultivates the qi power of Tai Ji or Ba Gua. For you Tae Kwon Do, JKD, and hard stylists who are curious about the soft power of internal styles, try following along on the Universal Form soft method. Feel the qi. Then do a hard Universal Form. Compare. (Internal stylists should reverse the process and do a Universal Form hard).

Ask yourself these questions: How does this exercise train my body to generate soft or hard power? What different combat strategy correlates to hard or soft power? Hard or soft? Which is more powerful? Is there any difference? What do you think?

Keep practicing and pondering,

Lawrence Tan
