Want a big tip to perfecting your martial techniques? This open secret is part of traditional kung fu wisdom and now seems to be scientifically verified. You may be hearing or reading of the 10,000 Hour Rule, expounded by the popular author, Malcolm Gladwell. He states a general theory on acquiring excellence in any field from the Beatles in music, Einstein in physics, Gates in technology, and we can extrapolate Bruce Lee in martial arts.

The “10,000 Hour Rule” essentially postulates that achieving extraordinary abilities of a specific task requires practicing twenty hours a week for ten years – or 10,000 hours. Now let us apply this to mastery of a martial art skill.

Every martial artist who throws a simple front kick, reverse punch or perhaps more specialized tiger claw or dragon take down may seem skillful after five years. But according to this theory, it is still not enough time for true excellence.

In Chinese, the words kung fu, have the same meaning of this rule although it doesn’t quantify the amount of time. In the calligraphy above, the character “kung” which means work or effort is comprised of two radicals: effort and time. Therefore, only through disciplined hard work and effort doing a specific skill over a long period of time will bring true skill. The word “fu” means human and the Chinese character juxtaposes the character for human and heaven, subtly implying a divine or cultivated person.

Whether you are dedicated to capoeira, krav maga, wing chun, jkd or mma, the 10,000 Hour Rule provides insight into the what is needed to attain superior technical abilities – not true mastery. That requires two to three times that.

Is there any specific fighting technique or form you want to make awesome? Narrow it down to a core of three techniques or a single form and apply this rule. If the wisdom of traditional kung fu and Gladwell’s rule are scientifically valid, then you are on your way to mastering those martial techniques.

Question: There are certainly many successful martial artists fighting and teaching, who have haven’t practiced the arts a decade. What are the implications? What do you think?

Keep exploring and practicing,

In Act One of Shakespeare’s Richard III, the future king says “Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious summer by this son of York…” It is a statement of celebration, difficulty has turned a corner. Today, Feb 2nd, in Pennysylvania, the grand groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. The tradition tells us this means six more weeks of winter. This is the harshest season in the cycle. It may have a feeling of stagnation, coldness, isolation – with no imminent sign of spring.

Set in cold and snowy Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, we almost all know the film Groundhog Day has a hidden message. An egotistical weatherman trapped in time relives the same day for years until he is liberated by his own awareness. It is an endless winter, a time of seeing his shadow. This is an allegory of our spiritual journey.

We may see something of ourselves in the Groundhog Day protaganist Phil Connors. Inside of us are the moments of self loathing or self absorption. We are the grandiose, or the world weary. Both are painful. This is a time to take a good look — do you see your shadow? Where are you in your life? In your practice?

Our path is one of process, flow, progress. The story of the warrior always has at its core the apprentice finding his way along the road to mastery. It is learning from mistakes, preparation, practice, meditation, change, growth. For us at TanDao, the orientation is always the martial way, though the philosophy applies to anything you endeavor. It is the cycle of the Evolving Martial Artist: the warrior, the scholar and the monk. These three parts of the self are all moving, turning together, each with elements of the other changing us. We’ll slow it down to get a clear look at the stages of the evolution. In the first stage, there is youthful arrogance, egocentric attitudes, a stumbling, yet flexible growth. Second, a time for refinement and responsibility as focus shifts away from the self. Last, awareness beyond the self — compassion, as knowledge flows into serenity and wisdom. They are all moving into one another, flowing, changing. The final and total integration is the soul of the quiet master.

In change there is salvation. And redemption. If you are mired on your path, work to break the loop. Like Phil in Groundhog Day, learn to work, practice and play for the joy of work, practice and play. Take the journey, leave your ego in the dust. When you look, may you find no shadow there, as your long winter makes its way into the sun.

Knockout of the century! (Nocaute do seculo!)

Awesome! Though brutal, this is a beautifully executed spinning wheel kick. Watch this again, because it is the Platonic ideal of fighting beautifully in a unrehearsed, unchoreographed fighting competition.

High spinning kicks to the head, common to capoeira, tae kwon do, hapkido and certain northern kung fu systems require great skill.

Evolving Martial Artists appreciate this supreme expression of kicking, yet regard it as a stupid self-defense technique. Why? It is too dangerous for a violent encounter when a mistake can have serious consequences.

In TanDao we learn to distinguish between a high probability and high destruction technique when determining which of the multitude of punches, kicks, throws and fighting movements from different styles are truly practical and efficient for real fighting.

This kick is a high destruction technique as evident from this dramatic knockout. Yet fans of MMA, tae kwon do or kickboxing know how rarely this kick connects in fighting tournaments. A right hook or roundhouse kick to the head is statistically far more common. As such, this type of high kick is regarded as a low probability technique. It should be avoided in any serious violent encounter, no matter how skilled you are. By all means, use them for wowing audiences at demos and for movie fights scenes, but for self defense, a wise martial artist will employ high probability techniques all the time.

Keep it simple.

Our theme at TanDao for Evolving Martial Artists is to bridge the gap between modern martial science and traditional martial arts.

This Year of the Dragon, we will introduce fighting techniques that are both high probability and high destruction that are taken from our TanDao Dragon Form.

Keep exploring and practicing,

For those who appreciate the aesthetics of martial arts within an authentic Chinese cultural context can marvel at Master W. Lee’s inspiring Dragon Form, from http://dragongatesanctuary.com/. Powerful, flowing and effortless. High level kung fu. A bow to Master Lee for revealing the dragon spirit.

Modern martial artists — JKD and MMA — who focus strictly on utilitarian moves and competitive violence for street and ring may miss the deadly techniques and tactics concealed behind these soft Daoist Dragon motions. Without the eyes to see, many modern fighters just don’t get it.

The question remains: does this stuff work?

The challenge for Evolving Martial Artists is to creatively balance the brutal fighting efficacy of modern fight science and the hidden depth and subtleties of the dying traditional art.

Get ready for Dragon 123. The TanDao Dragon merges the ancient art and modern fight science.

We want to send out birthday wishes to Muhammad Ali who is 70 today.
Muhammad Ali used the phrase “float like a butterfly sting like a bee” to describe his boxing style. Although not intended, this street poetry eloquently captures the Chinese philosophical notion of yin and yang, the balancing of opposing yet complementary forces. High level kung fu seeks the skillful merging of hardness and softness for superior power, mobility and stability for footwork and strength and flexibility for technical skills.

Anyway, not to get carried away, but we wanted to give a bow of recognition and respect to a great boxing warrior who had the courage to go the distance after seeming defeat to become three times heavyweight champion of the world. Yet even greater was his courage and integrity of his moral conviction. The old boxing master was a warrior monk indeed. Happy Birthday.

At TanDao we explore the full spectrum of the martial journey to mastery. We aspire to be the awakening master to discover the dimensions of the art that transcends fighting and the martial artist’s popular notion of what the art is.

Along the martial path to mastery, the very meaning of martial arts changes at different stages of our development. Just like the same oak tree appears differently during the four seasons – green buds in spring, lush foliage in summer, colored leaves in autumn, barren branches in winter – our values, what is truly important to us as individuals, changes as we grow and mature. Not just our punches change to animal moves and then to internal palm strikes but our thinking changes.

The young warrior trains the body striving for six pack abs and kick ass prowess. Of course, this is the popular Bruce Lee image of martial art, becoming a total fighter in all fighting ranges: kicking, punching, trapping and grappling. The macho art phase.

But there is more. Chinese Shaolin and Daoist kung fu is mental. The martial scholar delves into the intellectual aspects of fighting history, philosophy and science behind the physical techniques. A this stage, the martial scholar explores theories like yin/yang, five elements, the principle of Dao as well as bio-mechanics, leverage, anatomy that underlies a well executed hip throw techniques and strategy. As the martial warrior strengthens the body, the martial scholar is simultaneously strengthening the intellect.

Yet the rarefied realms of the martial way is that of the martial monk, who seeks the spiritual liberation as Bodhidharma taught. The meaning expands beyond the ring, mat or street to life itself. At this stage, the goal of martial arts is a transformative process for liberation of the self. But it is terrifying to confront our inner demons, few enter this part of the path.

The challenge of Evolving Martial Artists (warrior/scholar/monk) is to bravely shatter through their existing understanding of martial arts and become inner warriors of the mind and spirit. Keep going.

The Dragon is a symbol of the ultimate power of nature. In kung fu, it symbolizes high level martial arts. The TanDao Dragon is coming!

Do you have your New Year’s resolution list? I no longer make them to avoid disappointing myself early in the year. At the same time, I’ve discovered the power of goal setting for martial arts excellence.

Of course, our goals are to be more powerful, faster or learn that new take down, kata or be the best of the best. But these goals are too general to have effective impact on learning. Research shows that creating specific goals that can be measured (increasing number of repetitions or time) and put in a progressive time frame (in three weeks… three months…half a year…) is an effective method of achieving excellence.

Less is more: Specialize on Single Technique

But even before making up your schedule you must have a specific goal. So for example, this New Year focus on mastering a single technique, say a front kick. Of course, practice all your other kicks but concentrate on understanding everything about a basic front kick.

Do you know there are at least seven different ways of delivering a front kick? It’s not enough to learn a technique and how to apply it. Even a basic front kick has many subtleties. All you need is one for fighting, but learning nuances and variations will give you hidden insights into bio-mechanics and tactical application that apply to all your kicks. After a year of intensive specialized training you will have a realistic front kick as a core weapon to add to your personal fighting repertoire.

Evolving martial artists discover that specializing on a specific technique for a long period of time opens up secrets to the martial science and art. Think about it: what single technique do you want to master? Got it? Then go for it this year.

Watch out: The TanDao Dragon is coming this year!
You’re in a convenience store, examining a can of Spam in one of the aisles. Suddenly a hooded man bursts through the door, pulls out a .45, and waves it in the cashier’s face demanding the contents of the cash register. You begin breathing shallowly, from the chest, as fear for you own life pervades you. Thoughts pinball through your mind: Will he shoot the cashier—and then me? Am I to die in a convenience store of all places? Where are the police?

The cashier complies; the robber bolts through the door. Your breathing slows and deepens and the thoughts in your mind slow. You become calm.

This scenario illustrates the connection between breathing and the mind: Breathe shallowly and quickly, and your mind generates a frenzy of thoughts. Breathe deeply, from the abdomen, and the thoughts slow and become manageable.

What has happened when you perceived danger was your body reacted with the fight-or-flight response—it’s kicked in the sympathetic nervous system, one of the two components of the autonomic nervous system. Your body floods with adrenaline from your adrenal glands as you prepare to confront the threat to your life.

As the threat passes you breathe deeply and the parasympathetic nervous system becomes engaged: heart rate slows, blood pressure returns to normal, adrenal glands stop pumping adrenaline into your system. Normality—you are calm and your body can return to normal operations, such as digestion.

The fight-or-flight response is vital for short-term situations—such as when our distant ancestors confronted deadly threats from saber-tooth tigers and immense short-snout bears. But if you are confronting a serious disease or condition, such as cancer or PTSD, your fear will trigger this response continuously, flooding your body with adrenaline and other chemicals such as cortisol. The effect? Your body cannot heal properly, as these substances compromise the immune system.

The solution? Learn to breathe deeply, expanding your abdomen and filling the lungs from the bottom up. You not only kick in the parasympathic nervous system but also provide much more oxygen to the blood, helping your immune system to operate at a high level.

And there’s another tremendous benefit from abdominal breathing: The lymphatic system, which relies on respiration and muscular action to work (it has no pump, such as the heart pumping the blood), will work much more efficiently. The lymphatic system contains vital elements of the immune system, such as the bone marrow—the blood factory—and the thymus gland, which kicks out T-cells, the body’s natural killer cells which destroy cancer and other invaders.

The lymphatic system does many things, such as producing lymphocytes that fight disease and removing toxins from the cells. If you are fighting cancer or another serious condition or disease, abdominal breathing is a crucial element in helping you win your fight.

I learned deep, abdominal breathing as the first step in my practice of qigong (chee-gung, which means energy work—Chinese internal energy exercises). It is also a vital component in other meditative and energy arts such as yoga, tai chi chuan and transcendental meditation.

You can learn abdominal breathing by expanding your abdomen as you breathe, focusing on filling the lungs with air from the bottom up. A good way to test if you’re doing it correctly is to lie on the floor and place a box of Kleenex on your stomach. As you breathe, the box will rise and fall with the motion of your stomach.

If you are fighting cancer, as I have many times years ago, you may be too tired from chemotherapy and/or radiation to do standing or moving qigong, tai chi chuan or yoga. But you can always lie down and breathe deeply, and still stimulate your immune system. It worked for me: four bouts of bone cancer, two bone marrow transplants between 1991 and 1996—and I’ve been clear ever since. Fifteen years of good health. I can’t catch a cold.
